ABOUT SPENCER
For over 15 years, Spencer worked as both a Digital Imaging and Data Management Technician in IATSE 667. During this time, he had the privilege of working with some of the industry’s elite Cinematographers. From films like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) and Frankenstein (2025) to shows like Star Trek: Discovery (2024) and Most Dangerous Game (2020), his experiences became an apprenticeship in the craft.
All of this practical knowledge was gained by spending every day at the epicenter of framing, lighting, and rigging. He has worked in environments that range from intimate character drama to high speed aerial photography chases. Additionally, he has experience working on set during complex special effects sequences, stunt choreography, capture of VFX elements, and use of cutting-edge technologies such as augmented-reality volumes. His technical background has also provided him with extensive knowledge of optics and digital cinema systems. He has years of experience in both creative and technical look development.
To date, his expertise is so embodied, that it allows Spencer to focus on creativity while shooting projects. He has a love of Low-Dynamic range; using pronounced separation of positive and negative space. This contrast leads the eye where is most important, respecting brevity in storytelling. He believes in using rich, vibrant colors to create memorable images that pop— that pull the audience into the world he creates. He takes inspiration from the likes of Bob Richardson, Dan Laustsen, Wally Pfitser, and Roger Deakins; the masters that have informed and shaped these sensibilities. Similarly, he takes inspiration from the illustrations of Gustav Doré and the paintings of Michelangelo Merisi, among others.
